Answer
Tamil Bible in English letters: what Tanglish is and how to read scripture with it
Tanglish is Tamil written with English (Latin) letters — the way Tamil speakers type on WhatsApp. கர்த்தர் என் மேய்ப்பராயிருக்கிறார் becomes karthar en meypparaayirukkiraar. The தமிழ் வேதாகமம் (Tamil Vedhagamam) app can show every one of the 31,102 verses of the Tamil Bible in Tanglish, so if you speak Tamil but never learned to read it, you can still read scripture in your own language.
Who Tanglish reading is for
Most Tamil families outside Tamil Nadu have someone who understands every word of a Tamil sermon but cannot follow the printed Bible. Children who grew up in Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf, Europe or North America; adults who went to English-medium schools; spouses who learned Tamil by ear. They already know the language. What they lack is the script, and Tanglish removes that one barrier.
How the app produces Tanglish
The app does not carry a second, romanised copy of the Bible. It converts the Tamil text on your phone, verse by verse, as you read. The conversion follows the everyday spelling Tamil speakers use when texting, not the academic ISO 15919 system with its diacritics, because that is the spelling people already read fluently.
| Tamil | Tanglish | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| ஆதியிலே தேவன் வானத்தையும் பூமியையும் சிருஷ்டித்தார். | aadhiyilae thevan vaanathaiyum poomiyaiyum sirushtithaar. | Genesis 1:1 |
| கர்த்தர் என் மேய்ப்பராயிருக்கிறார், நான் தாழ்ச்சியடையேன். | karthar en meypparaayirukkiraar, naan thaazhchiyadaiyen. | Psalm 23:1 |
| சங்கீதம் · யோவான் | sangeedham · yovaan | Book names |
A few conventions make it read naturally:
- th is த (thevan, God), zh is ழ (thaazhchi), ng is ங, nj is ஞ.
- Long vowels are doubled letters: aa, ee, oo (vaanam, jeevan).
- A single consonant after a vowel is written soft, the way it is spoken: magan, anbu, indha. Doubled and word-initial consonants stay hard: pakkam, appam. Clusters are written the way people text them: karthar, velicham, Yesu.
- A word-final ஏ becomes ae: Mosae, engae.
Three ways to read a chapter
At the top of every chapter there is a switch with three positions:
- Tamil — the original script only.
- Tanglish — English letters only.
- Both — each verse in Tamil with its Tanglish line directly beneath. Reading this way for a few weeks is the easiest route to learning the script, because you always know what the Tamil letters are saying.
The choice is remembered. The app also asks on first launch whether you want Tamil or Tanglish as your main mode, and a toggle on the home screen switches between them any time. In Tanglish mode the verse of the day, its WhatsApp share card, search results and saved verses all appear in Tanglish, and the tabs and book names switch to English so the whole app is navigable without Tamil script.
What Tanglish is not
Tanglish is a change of letters, not a translation. The words are still the Tamil Old Version, word for word; only the alphabet changes. You still need to understand spoken Tamil to follow it. It is also generated by rules, so an occasional word may be spelled slightly differently from how you would type it yourself — the meaning is never affected.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tanglish a translation of the Bible?
No. Tanglish keeps the exact words of the Tamil Old Version and only changes the alphabet from Tamil script to English letters. It helps people who speak Tamil but cannot read the script.
Can I share a verse in Tanglish on WhatsApp?
Yes. When the app is in Tanglish mode, the verse-of-the-day share card and any verse you share from the reader are written in Tanglish.
Does Tanglish need an internet connection?
No. The conversion happens on your phone, and the whole Bible is already inside the app, so it works fully offline.
Is the Tanglish Bible app free?
Yes. The Tamil Vedhagamam app is completely free on Android and iPhone, with no ads, no subscription and no in-app purchases.
Is there a Tanglish Bible PDF or printed book?
Yes, free Tanglish Bible PDFs are at tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/pdf/ — one per book, no sign-up. There is no single whole-Bible PDF, because the complete Bible in Tanglish runs to about 1,850 pages, which is slow to download and awkward on a phone. We do not sell a printed Tanglish Bible. Any chapter can also be read in Tanglish on the website — try John 3 or Psalm 23, each verse with its Tanglish line — or inside the free app, offline.
Is Tanglish the same as a romanised or transliterated Tamil Bible?
Yes. Romanised Tamil, transliterated Tamil and Tanglish all mean Tamil written in English letters. The app uses the everyday texting spelling rather than the academic ISO 15919 system.
