Answer

Tamil Bible Old Version: which translation the app uses, and why

The தமிழ் வேதாகமம் (Tamil Vedhagamam) app uses the Tamil Old Version (பழைய மொழிபெயர்ப்பு), the traditional Tamil Bible translation read in Tamil churches for well over a century and now in the public domain. All 66 books are included in full — 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses — with nothing abridged and no other edition mixed in.

What the Old Version is

The Tamil Old Version descends from the 19th-century Union translation prepared by Protestant missionaries and Tamil scholars, and it became the standard Bible of Tamil Protestant churches. It is written in a formal, literary Tamil. Its cadences are the ones most Tamil Christians have memorised:

Because the Old Version is what is read aloud in most Tamil congregations, following along in the app matches what you hear from the pulpit, word for word.

Why the app uses it

What it is not

The app does not contain the திருவிவிலியம் (Tamil Common Language Bible), any modern paraphrase, or an English translation. There is a single text, so there is no version picker; the Tamil / Tanglish switch in the reader changes the alphabet the same words are shown in, not the translation.

How the text was prepared

The verses come from an openly available digitised copy of the Old Version. Before release the text was checked chapter by chapter against printed editions, and more than 130 typing errors in the digital source (including several in Luke) were corrected in version 1.2.3. If you find a verse that does not match your printed Bible, email sunil.soundarapandian@gmail.com with the reference; corrections ship in the next update.

Book names

Books are listed under their Tamil names, with English names shown in Tanglish mode. A few that differ most from what English readers expect: யாத்திராகமம் is Exodus, உபாகமம் is Deuteronomy, சங்கீதம் is Psalms, நீதிமொழிகள் is Proverbs, பிரசங்கி is Ecclesiastes, அப்போஸ்தலர் is Acts. Typing a reference such as யோவான் 3:16 into search jumps straight to the chapter.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tamil Old Version in the public domain?

Yes. The Tamil Old Version is a 19th-century translation whose text is in the public domain, which is why the app can include the complete Bible free of charge and without ads.

Does the app include the whole Bible?

Yes. All 66 books of the Old and New Testament — 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses — are bundled inside the app and readable offline.

Can I switch to a different Tamil translation or to English?

Not at present. The app contains the Tamil Old Version only. The Tamil / Tanglish switch changes the alphabet, not the translation.

Is this the Bible Society Tamil Bible?

The app uses the traditional Tamil Old Version text, the same translation printed in most Tamil Protestant Bibles. It is not the Tamil Common Language Bible (திருவிவிலியம்) or any modern revision.

Is this the Catholic (RC) Tamil Bible?

No. The app contains the Protestant Tamil Old Version. The Roman Catholic Tamil Bible (திருவிவிலியம்) is a different translation with a different book list and is not included.

Can I download the Tamil Bible Old Version for free?

Yes. The Tamil Vedhagamam app is a free download on Google Play and the App Store and contains the complete Old Version for offline reading. It is an app, not a PDF or APK from a third-party site.
