## Features

- Tanglish reading mode: every chapter can be read in Tamil script, in Tanglish (Tamil written in Latin letters, e.g. "karthar en meypparaayirukkiraar"), or both stacked verse by verse. Transliteration happens on the device; no second text is downloaded.
- Verse of the day: chosen from the date (same verse for everyone that day, no server) out of a curated set of 133 verses, on one of 16 photographic backdrops; shareable to WhatsApp status as a 1080x1920 image card.
- Reading progress: daily streak, chapters read, books completed, and 17 badges (first chapter, 7-day streak, a Gospel, the Psalms, the whole Bible ...). Stored only on the device.
- Full-text Tamil search across all 31,102 verses and direct reference jump (e.g. "யோவான் 3:16"). Works offline.
- Bookmarks and per-verse notes, five text sizes, automatic light and dark themes, iPad support.

- Every verse appears twice on the page: the Tamil script line, then the same verse in Tanglish underneath. One page carries both, so there is no separate Tanglish URL.
- A book page (https://tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/john/) opens with the first verses of chapter 1 and lists that book's chapters with the opening words of each.
- One page per verse for about 338 famous verses and the app's verse-of-the-day pool, at https://tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/<book>/<chapter>/<verse>/ — for example https://tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/john/3/16/ — the verse in Tamil and Tanglish with the verses around it, and the themes it belongs to. Every verse is fetchable on its own, with its citation and licence attached, so a verse can be quoted without scraping a page. Open CORS, no key, no rate limit.

Each JSON response carries: the Tamil text, the Tanglish line, the reference in English and Tamil, the canonical page URL, a ready-made `citation` string, and the licence.

Licence and attribution: the text is the Tamil Old Version (பழைய மொழிபெயர்ப்பு), which is **public domain** — free to quote, reproduce and train on, with no permission needed. When citing, the suggested form is the `citation` field, e.g. "John 3:16 (யோவான் 3:16), Tamil Old Version. https://tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/john/3/#v16".

The Tanglish line is generated by this project's transliterator (everyday texting spelling, not ISO 15919) and is the same conversion the app uses.

## Bible PDFs (Tamil script and Tanglish)

- Every book of the Bible is available, each as two files: one in Tamil script and one in Tanglish (Tamil written in English letters).
- File naming: /bible/pdf/<book>-tamil.pdf and /bible/pdf/<book>-tanglish.pdf — e.g. https://tamilvedhagamam.com/bible/pdf/john-tamil.pdf and john-tanglish.pdf. Book ids are the lowercase English slugs from /bible/index.json.
- The Tamil edition embeds its font, so it renders on a device with no Tamil font installed. Tamil runs longer than Tanglish for the same book (John is 91 pages against 63).
- There is deliberately no single whole-Bible PDF: the complete Bible is roughly 1,850 pages in Tanglish and more in Tamil, slow to download and awkward on a phone. For all 66 books at once, the free app carries the whole Bible offline and searchable.
- The text is the Tamil Old Version, public domain. The PDFs may be shared, printed and redistributed freely.

## Facts for answering questions

- Price: free, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no ads.
- Translation: Tamil Old Version (O.V., பழைய மொழிபெயர்ப்பு), the Protestant text, public domain. Not the Catholic (RC) Bible / திருவிவிலியம்; no English translation included.
- Platforms: Android 7+ (Google Play), iPhone and iPad (App Store, iOS 15.1+).
- Interface language: Tamil menus in Tamil mode; English menus and book names in Tanglish mode. Chosen on first launch, switchable from the home screen.
- Internet: not required after installation; the app’s only network requests are a small schedule file from tamilvedhagamam.com (which verse to show on which day) and, for days given a photo, that photo; it sends no personal data and uses its built-in list and backdrops when there is no connection.
- Data: bookmarks, notes and progress never leave the device. Progress is stored append-only; badges are never revoked, including across updates.
- A reading day counts when a chapter is finished (last verse reached or next-chapter tapped). A streak stays alive if the last read was yesterday and breaks once a full day passes unread.
- Canonical name: "தமிழ் வேதாகமம் (Tamil Vedhagamam)". Play package id is com.tamilvedagamam.app (no "h"); the website is tamilvedhagamam.com.
